Osborn Shoes: Where Fashion Meets Philanthropy

Over Thanksgiving, I was introduced to a company that I hadn't heard of before: Osborn Shoes. After finding out more about the company, and spending a little too much time perusing through the products on their website, I thought that I'd dedicate a post to them so that more people can find out about their inspiring work and impressive (and stylish!) commodities. Osborn Shoes is a company that has vertically integrated manufacturing-- which means, among many other things, that they don't use sweat-shops. It was established in 2009, and offers handmade footwear: oxfords, booties, and even one-of-a-kind pieces. Here's their story:

"Co-founder Aaron Osborn, whose family runs one of the largest orphanages in Guatemala, stumbled upon the idea for Osborn in 2007 when he met an out-of-work cobbler while doing charitable work in the country. He and co-founder, Carla Venticinque, were searching for a way to combine their artistic backgrounds with their desire to uplift their adopted homeland. This search led to Osborn Shoes. That first cobbler still works with them full time, as do a small driven team of 20 other gifted artisans. Nestled in the volcanic mountains outside Guatemala City, these artisans craft shoes in a time honored old-world manufacturing environment dedicated to integrity and quality."

It's encouraging to see that, despite the presence of immense competition in the marketplace, there is still a company out there who's trying to make a difference-- not just money. As wonderful as all that is, it  gets even better: the shoes are fashion-forward, unique, and effortlessly trendy. At Osborn Shoes, your money will go further than just buying you a new pair of shoes. Look good and feel good, that's a double whammy!

Be sure to check out their teaser video for their lookbook and music video here, and if you like what you see, stay tuned, because they're about to add heels to their Spring collection!

The Feather Trend: Adore or Ignore?

Don't get me wrong, I love the faux-fur and animal-print trend, but I'm a little torn about the addition of feathers into the mix. Faux-fur is great because of it's absurdity: it's totally over-the-top, but because it's fake, it's not too pretentious. Feathers, even when they're fake (some are fake, right? I really hope so...), are still a little too realistic for my liking.

Here are some affordable feather-tastic items. What do you think of the feather trend-- adore or ignore?

This Season's Five Most-Wanted Wardrobe Pieces

There's a carpet of dead leaves on the ground and I can’t walk outside without being shoved backwards by the wind; I think it's safe to say that fall has arrived. Aside from the slight issue of having permanently, slightly-too-wind-swept hair, I am ecstatic about finally being able to whip out my fall/winter wardrobe—and yet, for some reason, I seem to be alone in my adoration towards the new season. Last week, I got lunch with a friend whom—much to my horror—showed up in a bright purple, spaghetti-strap sundress. Today, I watched in awe as a throng of shivering girls, clutching their cardigan-shrouded shoulders, walked around campus in their favorite pairs of summer sandals. What will it take for everyone to realize that summer has packed up and moved out? Put away the sundresses, say goodbye to those sandals, and learn to embrace the cold weather! Sweaters aren’t all that bad, you know.
In order to get everyone a little more excited, I’ve decided to put together a list of five essential wardrobe pieces for this fall (and winter, because let’s face it, it’s only a month or two away). Hopefully these pieces will give your wardrobe the added oomph that you need to brave the harsh wind and survive the frostbite. Enjoy!
1. A Military-Inspired Jacket
Military is one of the hottest trends out right now. It may be a little less cute and a little more combat, but it definitely brings a shabby-chic flare to any outfit. If you’re looking for an easy way to bring the military look into your closet, try a jacket. Military-inspired jackets are subtle but effective in finishing off any look so that you’re both trendy and toasty!
2. A Flat Boot
Whether your prefer suede to leather, or over-the-knee to ankle, make sure that you have a flat boot in your closet this season. Flat boots are both stylish and practical, allowing you to make it through even the iciest weather. The military trend has invaded the world of shoes, too, making lace-up boots one of this season’s most coveted items. If lace-up boots are too tough-girl for you, don’t fret, a classic pair of cognac-colored, leather, riding boots will spruce up any outfit.
3. Something (Faux) Fur
Fur is everywhere; from bags, to scarves, to hats, to coats, to vests, to shoes, it’s ubiquitous—and I’m not complaining! It will be both your warmest article of clothing and your most stylish, because vintage-inspired pieces are on the top of this season’s most-wanted list. If you’re a little shy about making this dramatic fashion statement, try incorporating fur into your wardrobe by buying a jacket with a fur-trimmed hood, or gloves with fur detailing. If you can’t get enough of this vintage look, go for a fur coat, it will deliver instant glam to any look. Just a tip for anyone with a tight budget (or any animal lovers): go for faux-fur, it is infinitely less expensive and significantly more humane!
4. A Camel-Colored Coat
Neutral hues are some of this season’s hottest shades. The best part? They go with everything! That’s why a camel-colored coat is a necessity this season; it’s chic, sleek, and classic, allowing you to look put-together even when the cold weather’s getting you down. If you’re liking the minimalist trend, try a studio coat, if you’re more of a prepster, go with a basic trench. You can’t go wrong with camel!
5. Something That Sparkles
Let’s face it: we all need a pick-me-up from time-to-time. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean that you have to exile anything fun from your wardrobe. In fact, you should always have fun with your wardrobe, and adding sequins or glitter is a perfect way to do that. The rockstar-glam look is very in, and you can achieve it with glitter-covered pumps, an embellished headband, or a sequin mini-dress. It’s important to have fun, but don’t forget to have some restraint—no one wants to look like a walking disco ball!

Annie Takes on the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Affordable Shopping: Part Two

Piperlime
★ ★ ★ ★
$-$$$

The day that Piperlime started selling things other than shoes was the best day of my life (mild exaggeration, but it was a pretty great day). Shopping at Piperlime is like having your own personal stylist, and her name is Rachel Zoe. Sound familiar? She is potentially the most famous celebrity stylist (…and designer…and editor) out there, and she even has her own show, The Rachel Zoe Project. Zoe works closely with Piperlime and has her own section on the website called, “Rachel Zoe’s Picks.” This is so incredible that I feel like I need to summarize: If you shop at Piperlime, you can have Rachel Zoe, the most sought-after stylist in Hollywood, pick out your clothes…for free! Like I said, incredible.

Look for: Shoes, obviously, handbags, outerwear, jeans, sweaters, and tops.

Ignore: The dresses are casual and kind of “eh,” for lack of a better word.

Francesca's
★ ★ ★
$-$$

I like to think of Francesca’s as the ultimate knock-off store, which is both a good and a bad thing. It’s a good thing because Francesca’s has $30 versions of clothes that normally cost $300. It’s a bad thing because sometimes there’s a reason those clothes cost $300—not everything is meant to be cheaply made.

Look for: Basics, outerwear, leggings, and jewelry.

Ignore: Anything leather, sequins, sparkly, or too trendy—it probably looks cheap.

Modcloth
★ ★ ★ ★
$-$$$

If you have alternative, eclectic style, Modcloth is the place for you; if you have traditional, classic style, Modcloth is still the place for you. Modcloth sells recognizable brands, like BB Dakota and Seychelles, but it also has a vintage section, which offers one-of-a-kind pieces (careful, they sell out fast!). At Modcloth, the customer always comes first. It has a “Be the Buyer” section, where you can vote on pieces for the website to sell, and it also pays careful attention to detail, individually bestowing ironic names upon each of its items (like calling a blue dress covered in flower appliqués the “Blue-ming Beauty Dress”). Modcloth is adorable, fun to peruse, and always reliable. Best of all? It’s cheap.

Look for: It has a little bit of everything, but its tops, sweaters, and outerwear are typically fantastic.

Ignore: You may have trouble finding a formal dress, most of their dresses are daytime appropriate.

Lulu’s
★ ★ ★ ★
$-$$

Lulu’s is a lot like Modcloth, but without the eccentric, eclectic feel. It offers a wide variety of well-known, affordable brands, with the addition of a few newcomer brands and vintage pieces to spice things up. Like Modcloth, Lulu’s also pays close attention to details, individually naming each of its items. It feels a little boutique-y and is easy to navigate, which is a nice change after dealing with overwhelming sites like Forever 21. It’s cute and fun—definitely worth a look…or two.

Look For: Going-out clothes (dresses, skirts, tops, heels)

Ignore: Most things are really, really good, but few things are amazing.

Amazon
★ ★ ★ ★
$-$$$

Isn’t Amazon a bookstore, you say? NO! It’s an everything store, and I truly mean everything. Amazon has and does it all, and is perhaps the most reliable online shopping site out there. All of Amazon’s products have buyer’s reviews—some long, some short, some good, some bad, and some absolutely hilarious (check out the reviews of the “Three Wolf Moon” t-shirt). You’ll know what you’re in store for when you make your purchase, which is something that is both rare and extremely valuable. Just a tip: you can narrow down your search by price, color, and customer ratings, which makes the options much less overwhelming.

Look for: Anything. If it’s not on Amazon, then it probably doesn’t exist.

Ignore: Nothing, but definitely, definitely read the reviews before you make a purchase.

Annie Takes on the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Affordable Shopping: Part One

In the past week I've had several people ask me for suggestions of good places to go shopping without spending a lot of money. Since I have spent more time than I'm willing to admit preparing for exactly that question, I have a wealth of knowledge to share with the world. So, I have decided to write reviews on affordable shopping stores-- both the good and the bad-- so you're all fully aware of what's out there. Please keep in mind that these reviews are just my own opinions of these stores; I encourage you to make your own opinions-- and then share them with me! Let me know if you have any questions or if you have any requests for my second batch of reviews!

H&M
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
$-$$

H&M is the Ikea of the fashion world (No, not just because they were both created in Sweden). There is so much that can be said for the wonderland that is H&M, but I’ll try to keep it brief. Unlike some other cheap, trendy stores, H&M, like high-end designers and retailers, is always one step ahead of current trends. Furthermore, H&M frequently features capsule collections from top designers (Lanvin’s collection will be released in H&M stores on November 23) with H&M approved prices. What more could a frugal fashionistia ask for?

Look for: Business clothes, trendy pieces, shoes, jeans, accessories, pretty much everything.

Ignore: Most things are worth at least a try-on, but beware of awkward sizing. Also, H&M stores vary drastically in quality—as in the Michigan Avenue H&M in Chicago and the St. Louis Galleria H&M might as well not be the same store. So, don’t swear off H&M until you’ve visited a decent store (like I said, the Michigan Avenue store is incredible, as are the H&M’s in New York City and Newbury Street in Boston, just to name a few).

Delia’s
★ ½
$$

Delia’s reminds me of my middle school dances and my awkward stage. That being said, the clothes are no more fashion-forward now than they were then. As tempted as I am to buy a “Future Mrs. Bieber” graphic tee for $25, I’m not sure that Delia’s qualifies as a clothing store for anyone other than preteens. Not only that, but $25 for a shirt that I could make with a $5 Hanes tee and a Sharpie? Come on now, Delia’s, I’m not in middle school anymore.

Look for: Basics and gag gifts (I’m serious. Dobkin, look out for the Bieber shirt underneath your Hanukkah bush).

Ignore: Everything else.

Old Navy
★ ★ ★
$

Old Navy is like an old friend (no pun intended) that I’ve lost touch with. Let me tell you something about Old Navy, for a period of about two years in the early 2000’s, Old Navy ditched its simpleton clothing and produced trendy, cheap items that were actually well made with tailored fits. Oh, how times have changed. Old Navy has since resorted back to providing more basic than unique items. Yes, the basics are reliable, but how many hoodies do you really need? Sometimes Old Navy pleasantly surprises me, though, and brings me back to happier days where even the biggest clothing snobs in my high school couldn’t resist Old Navy’s incredible clothes. But usually, I’m reminded that those days are gone. Sigh.

Look for: Intimates, loungewear, jewelry, casual shoes, outerwear, sweaters, pet accessories, and a few hidden gems

Ignore: There’s nothing to ignore because I’ve pretty much listed everything that you would find in the store above. Just don’t expect to find too many trendy items.

Hint: Look at their “trends we love” section on their website. It’s home to pretty much all of the clothes that they have that are worth checking out.

Forever 21
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
$

Forever 21 is the mother of all cheap clothing stores. Of course I am going to give this gift from God five stars, how could I not? Yes, Forever 21 has, from time to time, produced some of the tackiest items I have ever laid my eyes on, but in the world of affordable fashion, it is boss. Where would we be without Forever 21? I, for one, would have a much smaller wardrobe. From shoes, to purses, to clothes, to makeup, to room décor, Forever 21 does it all-- and does it all with an unrivaled flare. Its clothing options are so limitless that the possibilities can actually be overwhelming… usually in a good way, unless it’s Black Friday. The best part of Forever 21? Well, besides the fact that its items are dirt cheap, Forever 21 is one of the few affordable clothing stores that unabashedly copies high-end lines’ designs. You can literally find an imitation of any and every high-end designer’s clothing, some better than others. It’s so spectacular it shouldn’t even be legal (in fact, I’m not sure that it is…).

Look for: Trendy pieces, basics, anything that will go out of style in a short period of time.

Ignore: Most business clothes, some formal clothes, anything with faux leather and anything that you want to wear for more than a year or two—remember: it’s trendy, not practical.

Hint: Don’t see what you want? Check back tomorrow. In the past 24 hours, the website has added one and a half pages worth of items to the “New Arrivals” section. Seriously.

ASOS
★ ★ ★ ★ ★
$$-$$$

ASOS is a warehouse of clothing from various designers, countries, and trends. If you’re looking for something in specific, it is definitely a good place to check out because it will probably have several options. It’s a little hard to focus on the clothes if you’re not looking for something specific, though, because it simply has SO much stuff. Also, things can be pricey, so wait for a sale if you can. The sale section is good, the clothes are reliable, and even though it’s a British site, it has free shipping both ways to the U.S – incredible, I know.

Look for: It pretty much has everything you could ever imagine, and it’s all really trendy and unique. Great selection of formal dresses. Also, anything “ASOS” brand is cheap and cute.

Ignore: The outerwear is nice, but expensive, you could probably find it somewhere else for cheaper.
